21 fishermen arrested by Navy for using banned nets

Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 21 local fishermen on two separate occasions for allegedly engaging in illegal fishing practices.

SLNS Barana Naval personnel arrested three fishermen along with a dinghy and a banned fishing net, between Kolankanaththa and Wellamundalam area.

On the same day SLNS Vijaya naval personnel in Kalpitiya arrested another 15 local fishermen while illegally fishing in the seas off Baththalangunduwa, using banned fishing nets.

Along with the suspects, five boats, 4 fishing nets, 5 GPS units were also taken into custody.
