Bear 'On Rampage' Shot After Villagers Killed

A rampaging sloth bear has killed two villagers and a wildlife ranger who tried to catch it in an Indian forest, before being shot dead by police.

The two men were found dead after failing to return from an expedition into the forest to source edible flowers in the district of Mahasamund, east India.

A hunt for the animal ensued, and it was discovered by a wildlife officer who attempted to tranquillize it. - But he was also fatally mauled by the female bear before it was eventually shot dead by police.

Sloth bears are found wild in India, where humans have significantly reduced their habitat and hunted them for food and for their claws.

Some are captured, tamed and made to perform for tourists.

The species is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Indian media reports.
