North Korea sentenced a 21-year-old American student to 15 years with hard labour for removing a political banner from a hotel.

However, the U.S. State Department calls the sentencing unfair.

Spokesman to the department Mark Toner said the sentence against University of Virginia student Otto Frederick Warmbier is ‘unduly harsh’ and does not fit the alleged crime.

The U.S. has asked N. Korean government to pardon and grant Warmbier special amnesty and release him on humanitarian grounds.
