Fire fighters are struggling to control the fire that began yesterday afternoon in the forest reserves of Kirigalpotta - Bopaththalawa - Agarapathana and Hatton.
Sri Lanka Air forces MI-17 helicopter was deployed to assist the firefighters, while 30 army personnel and police officers from the area have joined in the attempt to extinguish the fire.
Police said that over 500 acres of forest has been destroyed due to the blaze.
Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Center Pradeep Kodippili stated that the fire is still spreading due to heavy winds and dry weather conditions in the area.
Meanwhile, fires broke out in several other areas in the hill country.
Yesterday 25 acres of forest near the St. Clare water falls in Thalawakele was destroyed by another fire.
At the same time police have initiated an investigation in search of the hunters believed to have instigated setting fire to these forest reserves.
Meanwhile the Meteorological Department stated that the temperature in several parts of the island has increased by 1 to 5 degrees Celsius.
