RUSSIA has been rocked by a major earthquake after a 6.6 magnitude tremor struck the east coast of the country.

Shockwaves were sent across the Kamchatka Peninsula from the centre about 146 miles southwest of the Commander Islands in the Bering Sea.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre measured the magnitude of the quake at 6.6 with an approximate depth of 40 miles.

Shaking was felt across the peninsula – which has a population of more than 300,000 – but there is believed to be no threat of a tsunami.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The area borders the Bering Sea which separates Russia from the US. It has been hit by earthquakes measuring up to 7.6 magnitude as recently as 2006, foreign media reports.
