The first penumbral lunar eclipse for the year will take place today.

The eclipse will begin at 3.09 pm and end around 6.40 pm Sri Lanka standard time, said Professor of Physics at University of Colombo Chandana Jayaratne.

Professor Jayaratne further elaborated that the moon does not enter into the dark shadow of the earth, but rather to the lighter shadow during a penumbral eclipse.

The second lunar eclipse for the year 2016 can be observed on 16th September.
