Proposal put forward by the Parliamentary Housing Committee to increase MPs’ allowances has been suspended with immediate effect.
The Speaker is scheduled to inform the Government of the decision in the near future.
The Speaker’s office announced that the suspension was decided on after party leaders’ discussed the matter at a meeting held yesterday.
At the party leaders’ meeting the Speaker said that it was fitting to reconsider the said proposals taking into account people’s views.
Meanwhile at the same meeting, all leaders expressed their consensus for meting out justice to the seven MPs who had not been provided houses at the Maadiwala House Complex.
The Housing Committee had recently submitted several proposals including a Rs. 50,000 housing allowance and a Rs. 75,000 office allowance to MPs.
