Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Health Services Director General, said the government was prepared to provide medical treatment free of charge to all people living with HIV in Sri Lanka.

He said that although 2,359 cases of HIV/AIDS were reported from Sri Lanka since 1987, the country’s HIV/AIDS prevalence rate is less than 0.01. Dr. Mahipala said Rs. 600 million was allocated from the budget to control and manage STD/AIDS in 2016.

There are 30 centers located countrywide to offer testing and treatment for STIs and HIV/AIDS, he said.

State hospitals were also now equipped to test for STIs, HIV/AIDS making it unnecessary to seek the services of private laboratories, he added.
