The Ceylon Electricity Board’s Engineers Association says that it is imperative to interrupt power supply for one hour per day, due to a crisis of power supply.
Chairman of the Association Athula Wanniarachchi told our news team that the power cut is essential due to the increase of the power consumption and the decrease of hydro power generation.
He reiterated that it would be difficult to maintain the water supply to main cities including Colombo and Kandy, without interrupting the supply of power.
Meanwhile, Development Director of the CEB Sulakshana Jayawardena stated that they are looking at offering an allowance to encourage the use of domestic power generation means, including the use of solar panels.
The Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy has also taken measures to offer discounts on bills to encourage the efforts taken to reduce the consumption of electricity.
Accordingly, the relevant discount will be offered to consumers who reduce their power consumption by 10 percent.
In addition, the government is also taking measures to purchase three Diesel power plants operating under the private sector to be used for emergency power supply.
Meanwhile, the Water Supply and Drainage Board says that certain areas are facing a problem concerning the supply of drinking water, due to sea water being mixed with the Kalu Ganga, which supplies water to many areas in Kalutara.
