The Authority of Renewable Energy has proposed to change the country’s Standard Time to tackle the electricity crisis that is looming due to the continuing dry weather.
The average daily electricity consumption has increased to 2400 Mega Watts from 2200 Megawatts due to the prevailing hot weather.
Chairman of the Renewable Energy Authority Keerthi Wickremerathna said that demand for power has increased due to the use of air conditioners and fans increasing.
During former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s tenure of office similar measures were taken where the Standard Time was changed in order to cope with a power crisis.
