The Chinese construction company overseeing the Colombo Port City project has demanded compensation from the Sri Lankan government, for the delay of recommencement of the project.
Construction work of the port city project was temporarily suspended after the current regime came into power
However, approval for the recommencement of the project was given after considering the new Environmental Impact Assessment report.
It is reported that the relevant Chinese firm has requested Sri Lanka a compensation of USD 125 million, in connection with delaying the construction work of the Port city for more than a year.
If not, the relevant Chinese firm has requested to reclaim more area of sea than what was assigned.
The Prime Minister is due to hold discussions with regard to the matter during his visit to China.
Secretary of the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development Nihal Rupasinghe stated that Sri Lanka is not ready to pay the compensation requested.
