After 44 years the entire Parliament is due to convene today as a Constitutional Board with the intention of drafting a new Constitution.
The previous such occasion was back in 1972 for drafting the Republic Constitution.
The Proposal submitted by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to convert the entire Parliament in to a Constitutional Board was approved in Parliament upon a 2 day debate.
The Speaker of Parliament will be the Chairman of the Constitutional Board while 7 Deputy Chairmen will be appointed from the Government and Opposition Ranks.
A Steering Committee will also be appointed and it will appoint necessary Sub Committees.
