The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has recovered over 1000 kilos of essential food items that are low in hygiene standards or do not fit human consumption.

The captured 1000 kilos include rotten potatoes, onions and fruits.

Chief Food Inspector of the Colombo Municipal Council M.B. Lal Kumara told Hiru news that yesterday’s raid was the first of a series of raids to be carried out to scrutinize the vendors that sell unhygienic foods during upcoming New Year season.

Strict legal action will be taken against venders selling unhealthy food or maintaining unsanitary conditions, the CMC said.
