The entire country took a festive mood with the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year yesterday.

Giving priority to the age old customs, people across the country celebrated the dawn of the traditional New Year in all its glory.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year dawned at the auspicious time of 7.48 last evening.

This year’s lighting of the hearth took place at 8:06 PM yesterday, while the time for the tradition of engaging in work, transaction and partaking of the first meal of the New Year were carried out at 8.54 last night.

Meanwhile, the custom of anointing oil is to take place at 10.41 a.m. on Saturday the 16th. According to the astrology, it is said that the custom should be carried out clad in blue attire, facing the west, while hanging banyan leaves over the head and placing Karada leaves under the feet.

The auspicious time for departing from home to the workplace for the first time in the New Year falls on Monday the 18th at the auspicious time of 6.27 AM.
