The US Geological Survey reported that a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar yesterday, with tremors felt across the region.

The quake took place at a depth of around 140 kilometers, north-west of Mandalay. There were no initial reports of any fatalities.

The tremor could be felt in Assam, the north-east Indian state, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are staying.

The royal couple, who are staying in a national park, were unharmed.

People in Myanmar's main city, Yangon, in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, and in Kolkata in India fled buildings in panic when the tremor struck.

Meanwhile, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of southern Philippines early this morning, with no damage or casualties immediately reported and no tsunami warning issued.

The quake occurred off Mindanao Island with its epicenter about 28 kilometers northwest of the mountainous town of Siocon.
