With the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year last evening, the next tradition in to take place is the anointing oil. The auspicious time at which this will take place is 10.41 a.m on Saturday the 16th.
The custom will be carried out clad in blue attire, facing west, while hanging banyan leaves over the head and placing Karada leaves under the feet.
After applying oil, folk will bathe for the first time in the New Year.
This year’s state ceremony of anointing oil will take place at Malegoda Sri Pushparama Vihara in Payagala, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
This year’s lighting of the hearth took place at 8:06 PM yesterday, while the time for the tradition of engaging in work, transaction and partaking of the first meal of the New Year were carried out at 8.54 last night.
Sufficient number of buses was deployed in Colombo and suburbs to facilitate transport needs for the public.
The auspicious time for departing from home to the workplace for the first time in the New Year falls on Monday the 18th at the auspicious time of 6.27 AM.
Meanwhile, the Colombo National Hospital stated that number of accidents during the New Year season has increased in comparison to the previous year.
According to National Training officer Pushpa Ramyani , the total number of accidents reported since 12th of this month to date is 507.
However, only four incidents involving fire crackers have occurred so far.
