There are reports of many who have lost the opportunity to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in 2016 or denied performing traditional customs due to various struggles they carry out.

Medical students have been engaged in a continuous ‘Sathyagraha’ opposite six medical faculties demanding to abolish Malabe private medical school and against privatization of education. They have been engaged in the ‘Sathyagraha’ for 78 days, the Convener of Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) Lahiru Chathuranga Weerasekara stated.

The present yahapalana government that made a promise to abolish private medical schools before coming to power has not taken any interest to the protest campaigns carried out by doctors and many other organizations demanding the government to abolish Malabe private medical school. Medical students continue their ‘Sathyagraha’ opposite their faculties for 78 days with a lot of sacrifices.
