Sinhala and Tamil New Year: Anointing oil today

The anointing of oil, the next tradition as part of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year will take place at 10.41 am today.

The custom is to be carried out clad in blue attire, facing west, while hanging banyan leaves over the head and placing Karada leaves under the feet.

After applying oil, folk will bathe for the first time in the new year.

This year’s state ceremony of anointing oil will take place at Walegoda Sri Pushpaaraama Vihara in Payaa-gala, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Several other events have also been organized at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Sri Maha Bodhiya and many other religious places of worship.

The auspicious time for departing from home to the workplace for the first time in the New Year falls on Monday the 18th at the auspicious time of 6.27 AM.
