Bullock cart owners stage a protest in Nawagamuwa

Monday, 18 April 2016 - 13:07

A group of bullock cart owners have staged a protest against banning bullock cart racing during New Year cerebrations this year.

Our correspondent stated that 100 bulls and carts have been brought to the ongoing protest near Munidasa Kumaratunga Vidyalaya at Bomiriya in Navagamuwa Kaduwela.

A circular was issued to police stations before the New Year, banning bullock cart racing during festival season.

The ban was issued after taking the requests by several organizations against animal cruelty.  However, bullock cart races were held in certain New Year festivals despite the circular.

Meanwhile, several bullock cart owners requested authorities to introduce relevant rules and regulations to prevent animal harassment, and allow for the continuation of bullock cart racing.
