A special committee to hear the grievances of young monks

Defense Ministry yesterday announced that an amnesty period to surrender illegal weapons will be declared from 25th April to 6th May.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Karunasena Hettiarachchi chairing a media briefing at the Media Centre of the Ministry of DefenseWednesday announced the amnesty period to return illegal weapons.

The Defense Secretary said the decision to announce an amnesty period to return illegal weapons was taken in the Security Council meeting with the President.

A person retuning a gun will be offered Rs.5000, Rs. 10000 for a pistol or Rs. 25000 for a revolver or a T-56 weapon.

He also noted that, in the future a committee comprising the Secretaries of the Ministries of Defense and Law & Order, IGP and several other officials of law enforcement will decide on issuance of weapons.
