The ministry of Health has commenced a broad program to analyse the Zika virus which causes severe birth defects.
Health Service Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala told our news team that all research relating to diseases are conducted under the supervision of Medical Research Institute.
Dr. Mahipala also stated that Sri Lanka is not at risk of spreading Zika virus at this time.
Detailed maps published in the journal eLife, show that more than two billion people live in parts of the world where the Zika virus is spreading.
Last week the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the virus does cause severe birth defects.
