A group of six intoxicated individuals, belonging to a gang, assaulted two police constables near Anuradhapura old bus stand last night.  One of the victims has been admitted to Anuradhapura teaching hospital.

Police have arrested three members of the gang and investigations are being carried out to arrest the remaining suspects.

The assault began as the two police officers intervened when the gang set out to attack the driver of a stationary bus. The gang then redirected the assault to the officers.

Police have identified the attackers as being members of a ransom collecting gang in the area.
