Sri Lankan born Canadian politician Rathika Sitsabaiesan will contest at the upcoming Canadian Parliamentary by elections for the Ontario Liberal Party.

The Huffington Post reported Sitsabaiesan, a former New Democratic Party MP for Toronto submitted her nomination papers to the Ontario Liberal Party this week.

She is seeking a seat in an upcoming by-election in Scarborough–Rouge River, left vacant with the surprise resignation of an MP last month.

The 34-year-old was elected to the Canadian Parliament in 2011 under the NDP ticket.

Born in Sri Lanka, Sitsabaiesan became the first parliamentarian of Tamil descent. She immigrated to Canada when she was five.
