The amnesty period to hand over illegal weapons to the police will commence today.
Ministry of Defence stated that this period would continue till May 06th.
During the period illegal weapons can be handed over to the nearest Divisional Secretariat, District Secretary offices and police stations.
Persons returning the weapon will not be subjected to any fines for holding a weapon.
‘Rs. 5000.00 for a Gun or similar kind (Gal Katas/ Badina Thuwakku), Rs. 10000.00 for a pistol or for a revolver and Rs. 25000.00 for a T-56 weapon will also be offered to the persons retuning the weapons,’ the Ministry of Defence stated.
