The death sentence of 83 prisoners commuted

The death sentence of 83 convicts has been commuted following the release of a report by the committee appointed to review capital punishment.

The President has issued orders on the recommendations of the particular committee.

The Death sentence can be passed for criminal offences such as manslaughter, rape and possessing or dealing narcotics under the Criminal Procedure Code of Sri Lanka. 

However capital punishment has not been implemented since 1976.
