Navy Arrests 32 Local Fishermen Engaged In Illegal Fishing

The Navy arrested 30 local fishermen who had engaged in illegal harvesting of sea cucumbers in the Northern seas.

Navy fast attack craft attached to SLNS Uttara in Kankesanthurai of the Northern Naval Command arrested the fishermen in the seas between Chundikulam and Vettalakerni.

During the raid 2264 sea cucumbers, 102 oxygen cylinders, 25 diving masks, 22 pairs of diving fins and 10 G.P.S units were taken into custody.

The fishermen and their equipment were handed over to the Inspectorate of Fisheries in Jaffna.

On the same day the Navy arrested two local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing activities using banned fishing nets in the Periyauppodai sea area in the East.

The fishermen were handed over to the police in Batticaloa.
