United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights announced that human rights experts Mónica Pinto and Juan Méndez will be visiting Sri Lanka from 29th April to 7th May.
The purpose of the visit is to assess recent developments and identify challenges related to the use of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and challenges to the independence of the justice system.
The human rights experts, are visiting having accepted an invitation from the government.
They will meet with governmental authorities, members of the judiciary and prosecution services, lawyers, civil society, the National Human Rights Commission, as well as victims and their families.
In addition to visiting Colombo, they will spend several days in other regions, including the Northern, North Central, Eastern and Southern provinces.
