Minister Gayantha Karunathilake states that the communiqué issued to the media , stating that the term 'Joint Opposition' not be used, was not an official statement from either the Government or the Ministry.

the minister confirmed that is was  merely a request letter issued by the Ministry Secretary based on his personal views.

Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka stated that he received the communiqué issued by the Mass Media Ministry Secretary only after it was issued  to the media.

Ministry Secretary Nimal Bopage, in a media release, informed all media institutions and journalists that using the term 'Joint Opposition' to describe a group of parliamentarians in the Sri Lankan parliament is in violation of the law.

The newly appointed Media Secretary warned the journalists that promoting a group of parliamentarians as 'joint opposition' while the ruling party and opposition party of the government are currently defined could make them liable.

The joint opposition says that it also rejects the letter issued by the ministry of media.

The representatives stated at a media briefing held yesterday, that the  announcement was issued as a threat to media.

Meanwhile MP Wimal Weerawansa noted that the government fears even the name of their collective.

Our news team inquired the Minister of mass media Gayantha Karunathilake regarding the matter.

He stated that he received the announcement only after it was issued to media institutions.

The announcement signed by the new secretary of mass media attorney at law, Nimal Bopage was released to the media last afternoon.

The letter indicated the letterhead of the ministry of mass media and was titled as a media announcement.
