Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for explanations from Mass Media Ministry Secretary Nimal Bopage about a communiqué issued to media institutes about the internal affairs of the parliament.

The communiqué released to the media on the 28th this month, under the theme ‘Leave no room for the misuse of noble media freedom’, caused a great controversy.

The communiqué has stated that it is illegal for a group of MPs in the opposition to refer to their faction as the Joint Opposition.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has noted that by releasing such a letter to the media, the Media Secretary has acted beyond his capacity concerning the internal parliamentary affairs.

Accordingly, the Prime Minister has summoned the Media Secretary to Temple Trees on Monday to provide explanation with regard to the matter.

However, Media Secretary Nimal Bopage has convened a media briefing in Colombo yesterday, to express his views over releasing the communiqué to media.
