Indian Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice president Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were arrested for a brief interval on Friday morning as they led their “Save Democracy” march. They were taken to Parliament Street police station and released within a span of 20 minutes.

In the meantime, about two thousand Congress workers attempted to break the police cordon and barricades, chanting slogans: “Down with dictatorship; Augsta Westland is BJP’s game.” The police cane-charged some protesters to control the crowd.

Prior to the police action, Congress leadership trained its guns at the BJP government in the Centre, criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for pursuing a strategy to “destroy Congress” and for not doing enough to bring relief to the people who are reeling under severe drought in various parts of the country, Indian media reports.
