President Maithripala Sirisena has said that decisions should be taken for the protection of the environment without being subjugated by influences. The President made this reference addressing the sixth conference on management of air in Sri Lanka.
The President said that world powers are distressed today. It is because they have deprived the right of the people to breath due to destruction of the environment. As such world conferences are being frequently held. It is not a secret that people have to purchase oxygen bags in main cities of countries which have witnessed massive development.
The President said that everyone is aware that Kandy is experiencing the highest air pollution in Sri Lanka. He said that in the issue of selecting a Ministry after he assumed office as President, he mentioned that he selected the environment portfolio mainly for two reasons. One was his interest he had on the subject. The second reason was his awareness on the influences made to those who are engaged in this subject. The political influences made in work related to the Environmental Authority, the Geological and Mines Bureau and the Gem Corporation is very high. This was the main reason why he took over this Ministerial Portfolio after becoming the President as there was no person who could influence him when decisions are taken. There is a 10-year as well as a 25 year plan on the standard of air management. He said that he wished to make a fervent appeal from all heads of state establishments that implement plans, not to hesitate in taking decisions. The President called on them to discharge their responsibilities to the letter.
The opening of the conference took place under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. Its aim is to submit research reports on the standard management of air and formulate plans.
