At least 35 tons of dead fish have appeared in a lake in southern China.

Chinese state media reported that piles of fish were washed up in a lake in Hainan Province.

Local authorities says the fish died due to salinity change and added that salinity levels likely occurred after a tide pushed the fish up farther into Hongcheng Lake in the city of Haikou.

Regional environment officials have launched an investigation into the incident.
