National Water Supply and Drainage Board says that the VAT increment which was imposed on the 2nd of this month will be added to the water bills from this month.
A senior spokesman of the Water Board noted that the current 11% VAT included in the water bill will be updated to 15 % from this month.
Meanwhile, a fundamental rights petition was filed with the Supreme Court today by a lawyer, stating that his fundamental rights have been breached after VAT was imposed on telephone services.
The petition further explained that a Nation Building Tax (NBT) is already imposed on the telephone services.
Therefore, the petitioner claims that it is not fair to impose VAT reform on the telephone services.
The petitioner has included the names of Finance Minister and the Attorney General as respondents of the petition.
Various opinions were raised during several media briefings convened in Colombo today with regard to the VAT reforms and the GSP Plus concessions.
However, expressing his views to the media today, Minister Sarath Amunugama noted that no decision has been taken whether to include the VAT reforms to the Water bills.
Meanwhile, the Joint Opposition also convened a media briefing in Colombo today concerning the VAT reform.
However, State Finance Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena joining a media briefing held in Colombo today, noted that the government has not been subjected to any unfavourable condition, while obtaining the GSP Plus concession.
