Military processions dropped from Victory Day commemoration

Thursday, 12 May 2016 - 20:23

State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardena says he would not allow anyone to commemorate the LTTE leaders who died from war within the Northern Province in a manner that would threaten the national security.

Speaking during a media briefing convened in Colombo today, he stated this in response to a statement made by provincial councillor M.K. Sivajilingam.

Provincial councillor M.K. Sivajilingam addressing media in Jaffna yesterday noted that a week has been declared from today until 18th, to commemorate the Tamils who died in the North.

Meanwhile, the State Minister further noted that the commemoration of the deceased war heroes and the disabled war heroes will be held near Battaramulla war hero memorial on the 18th of this month.

He also noted that military processions will be dropped from the Victory Day commemoration, as the relevant finances could be used to fund welfare activities of the surviving war heroes and bereaved families.
