Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes after the discovery of what is thought to be an unexploded WWII bomb in Bath.

Cops said up to 1,000 houses faced being cleared out after the device was unearthed by contractors using a digger at Royal High School in Lansdown Road.

A 300 metre exclusion zone was set up and officers went door to door telling people to leave their homes immediately, with frightened residents being moved to Bath Racecourse for their own safety.

Nearby roads were also closed and motorists asked to find other routes.
