120 Missing in Aranayake Landslide - 17 Bodies Recovered

Seventeen bodies have been recovered at this time following the landslide at samasara kanda in aranayake. 

Commanding officer of the Western Province who is in charge of the rescue operations Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe stated that about 120 residents have been reported missing and 66 houses have been destroyed.

The army launched rescue operations last night despite the inclement weather. 

Police and residents in the area extended their assistance to the army to continue the search for victims.

Major General Ranasinghe said that over 450 soldiers have been deployed. 

The Air force deployed two helicopters to monitor the area affected by the landslide.

Meanwhile the Disaster Management Center stated that one thousand and 47 residents of the affected village are being sheltered in four makeshift camps.

Meanwhile President Maithripala Sirisena inspected the landslide area of Saama-sara Kanda in Aranayake this afternoon. 

He also visited the makeshift camps of Dikpitiya Rajagiriya Vidyalaya in Ara-nayake and Hath-gampala Vidyalaya to inspect the prevailing situation.

At the same time, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe accompanied by ministers Sagala Rathnayake and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa inspected the village this afternoon.
