Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala became the first Sri Lankan ever to ascend the Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

It is also significant that Johann Pieris who accompanied Jayanthi, also ascended the summit of the Everest.

However, a Dutch man and an Australian woman, among the team of climbers, passed away while descending from the summit.

Reports indicated that the cause of the death was an illness contracted at the summit due to the extreme cold weather.
