A Buddhist monk of Mellawa in Marawila is reported to have been assaulted by a police constable attached to the Koswatta police station last night.

The monk has been identified as Somaa-loka Thera, a resident monk of Mellawa Suvi-suddha-ramaya.

The accused constable accompanied another officer to arrest the driver of the temple on the allegation of drunk driving.  The monk was assaulted as he attempted to intervene.

When our news team contacted the OIC of the Koswatta police, he stated that the monk had interrupted with police proceedures, while they were attempting to arrest an intoxicated youth.

He also said that he is unaware of an assault, that it was reported however that a warning had been given.

The OIC said an investigation has been initiated looking into the incident however.
