The Defence Secretary Karunasena Hetti Arachchi said that the report relating the incident where Eastern Provincial Chief Minister Ahamad Nazeer inappropriately reprimanded a navy officer, was handed over to the President.

Last Friday, Commanding officer of the Sampur camp captain Ranjith Premarathna was reprimanded during a prize giving held at the Sampur Maha Vidyalaya in Trincomalee.

Eastern Provincial Governor Austin Fernando who was also a former Defence Secretary and US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Atul Keshaf were present at the event and witnessed the incident.

The organizers of the event had not invited to Chief Minister Nazeer who was not invited to the prize giving by the organisers, had arrived following an invitation extended to him by the provincial governor.

On this occasion the enraged Eastern Province Chief Minister’s hand accidentally struck the face of a student who was participating at the Prize-giving.

The Navy expressed its displeasure over the incident this morning and, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wije-goonewardana stated that he would be handing over a report relating the incident to Defence Secretary Karunasena Hetti Arachchi today.

At the same time, Navy spokesman Alavi Akram said that the Sri Lanka Navy is pleased about the manner in which the Navy officer handled himself during the incident.
