Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe believes service organizations can play a vital role in government action.
Addressing the Rotary International Convention in Seoul, South Korea, the Prime Minister said that with many nations still recovering from the Great Recession, organizations like Rotary can help fill in the gaps.
He said that fiscal stress has led to cutbacks and uncertainty in government spending, particularly in the social sector.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also said that another role that service organizations can play is to officially act as an oversight body on the function of a government establishment in their field of expertise.
By this he said that government establishments would need to pull up their socks, leading to greater efficiency and productivity.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that Rotary has an invaluable partnership with the UN and expressed his gratitude for the efforts put in to eradicate polio.
