Elephant Calf Rescued at Hambantota Gets International Attention

A baby elephant aged four months fell into an uncovered drain in Hambantota port city area had been rescued by wild life officials and locals yesterday.

The locals have heard an unusual sound and found the elephant calf struggling to come out from the drain.

Footage shows the suffering calf struggling in the drain with hope, while wild life officials attempt to free it by smashing the sides of the drain with sledgehammers and a blow torch.

The young mammal that was suspected to be suffering with a broken leg has been taken away for medical treatment at the Elephant Transit Home a.k.a. "Eth Athuru Sevana".

A well grown elephant suspected to be the mother of the calf is also seen in the close proximity to the event.

Within a day, a number of leading international media reported the story world-wide admiring the rescue team.
