The cabinet has rejected the proposal submitted by Minister of Foreign Employment Thalatha Athukorala to amend the age limit of women intending to work as a housemaid overseas.
The cabinet paper had proposed that the age limit be brought down from 25 to 22.
In response to a query our news team made, a senior minister said that at the cabinet meeting, views were exchanged to the effect that as a result of this age limit amendment, more women would be motivated to go abroad, and it could have a harmful impact on society.
Therefore a committee headed by Minister Thalatha Athukorala was also appointed to study the subject of women going abroad along with the problems faced by them and formulate a national policy.
The senior minister said further that the committee’s report was scheduled to be submitted to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in the near future.
