Supreme Court Decides To Hear Petition Against Tax Increment

The Supreme Court granted leave yesterday (June 01st) to proceed with the petition filed against the VAT increment.

Accordingly, the petition file by MP Wimal Weerawansa and several others will be considered on 22nd of June.

The petitioners stated that the government’s decision to increase the VAT is unlawful.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has granted leave to proceed with the fundamental rights application filed by the officers of the army intelligence who are currently in remand in connection with the disappearance of journalist Pradeep Eknaligoda.

Reports indicated that the Director of the CID, the IGP and several others have been named as respondents.

The petition was considered before a bench of three Supreme Court judges chaired by chief justice K. Sripavan today.

The bench ordered to hear the petition on 29th of August.
