A Heart Patients’ Organisation is having a discussion with the Health Ministry’s authorities about the stoppage of heart surgery at Karapitiya hospital.
Heart surgeries at Karapitiya hospital were suspended two weeks ago to allow urgent maintenance of the cardiology unit.
Authorities stated that the unit was closed for several repairs including the mending of a water leakage.
However the patients and trade unions state that the authorities do not take interest to expedite the restoration.
It is reported that the lives of several patients in the waiting list are at risk due to the delay of re-opening the cardiology unit.
Therefore the patients visited the Health Ministry to discuss the matter intending to find a speedy solution.
However when our news team contacted Karapitiya hospital authorities, a spokesman said that all possible measures have been taken to restore the cardiology unit at its earliest.
Meanwhile trade unions charge that the negligence of the hospital authorities and health ministry officials has caused the delay to reopen the cardiology unit.
