Switzerland holds the first national vote on whether to introduce a basic income scheme.

It was reported that under terms of the referendum, the government would give every adult citizen a monthly income of 2,500 Swiss francs ($2,554), regardless of need.

Thus the voters can vote on a referendum that asks if they want "unconditional basic income."

However, critics warn that the policy would explode the state budget.
