A general amnesty period for long-term absentees from the tri forces has been declared from 13-30 June. “Those who have been absent from duty without approval lead a ‘wanted’ life.

They are listed in the police gazette and do not possess their legal documents to carry their daily activities”, said Defense Secretary, Karunasena Hettiarachchi addressing a media briefing held in Colombo today.

They are on the run and have no access to legal documentation as a result. Thus we invite them to come get their documentation cleared so that they can get on with their lives.

And the most absentees were between the age groups of 20-32 years. Only absentees who have left the forces prior to 31 December 2015, are applicable for the general amnesty. Major General Nandana Udawaththa warned that all names of absentees would be registered under the police gazette once the amnesty period is over and would be subject to arrest at any time.
