Transport on the stretch of High Level Road alongside the Kosgama – Salawa Army Camp continues to be limited.
Western Province Army Commandant Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe said that all vehicles except for buses, ambulances, vehicles of residents of the area and relief service vehicles were not permitted access.
Meanwhile a senior Kosgama police officer told our news team that the road was expected to be re-opened after the clearing of debris has been completed.
Major General Ranasinghe also said that accordingly he would request that drivers to use alternative roads.
Residents living in the areas in close proximity to the army camp staged a protest at the Salawa junction yesterday.
The protesters expressed their grievances stating that they were inconvenienced as a result of the road in front of the camp being opened before re-construction of their damaged property had been completed.
A tense situation cropped up between the officers on site and the protesters.
In view of the people’s protest, the stretch of the Colombo – Avissawella Road between Boralugoda and Kaluaggala was barred for vehicular transport at about 1 p.m. yesterday.
