The Government says the no-confidence motion on Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, which was defeated in Parliament last week, was a failed attempt by the opposition to push for a change of Government.

Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management Vijith Vijayamuni Soyza told reporters today that even former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his son, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, had not supported the no-confidence motion.

“They were not even in Parliament when the vote was taken,” he added.

The Minister insisted that the no-confidence motion was not brought about in the best interest of the people but only to meet the agenda of the opposition.
