President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe inaugurated the Mahaweli Maha Stupa built in Kotmale area today.
Seth Pirith was chanted by the Maha Sangha to invoke blessings during the occasion.
The construction of Mahaweli Maha Stupa commenced during the regime of then President J.R. Jayawardena, led by former Mahaweli Development Minister Gamini Dissanayake.
Mahaweli Maha Stupa denotes the completion of the Mahaweli Development Program.
Mahaweli stupa measures 289 ft in height and 628 ft at its perimeter, and can accommodate 4000 devotees simultaneously in its premises.
