Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has assured the state assembly that her government would retrieve the Kachchatheevu Island, which was given to Sri Lanka by India in 1974.
Attacking her rival DMK in the Assembly, the AIA DMK leader said her government had been unable to take back the island even after 25 years of efforts because of the DMK led by M Karunanidhi.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that she will bring an amendment to ensure that the island is retrieved from the hands of Sri Lanka.
Keeping her poll promise, Jayalalithaa said that she wants the resolution on Kachchatheevu Island to be passed in both houses of the parliament.
The Chief Minister has refused to recognize Sri Lanka's sovereignty of the islet, which was ceded to Sri Lanka by the Supreme Court of India and has challenged the agreements in court.
Tamil Nadu considers ceding of Kachchatheevu as a main reason for the long-standing dispute between the fishing communities of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
